Why?

Music is everything to me. I started playing the guitar at age 13, and fell in love with it immediately. Over the years, I have always been open minded towards new musical styles but have been mostly interested in Jazz (Miles, Trane, Wes Montgomery, Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, etc.), hip hop and R&B. Around '95 I heard a song called "Born Slippy" by "some band" called Underworld. Ever since then I have been addicted to Electronic music! I love everything from Drum n' Bass/Jungle to House, Techno to Progressive Trance, Ambient and Downtempo.

I got into writing my own music just before I discovered techno. I used to write and play jazz and classical music but after I became interested in techno music, I started trying to create those kinds of sounds in my bedroom on a 486 computer, a keyboard and a 4 track cassette recorder.

When I started going to raves the whole atmosphere was so amazing and new to me. I felt right at home in those dirty old warehouses at 3:28am on a Sunday morning. I loved to dance, meet new people and listen to the DJ's as they would weave together a unique and magical soundtrack for that particular night.

This is where I say to myself "I want to do THAT!" So I bought some cheap turntables, a mixer, a few old house records and I started practicing every night. . .

Over the years, I have found myself playing at many raves throughout the Salt Lake valley. During the summer of '02 I held a monthly residency at the infamous club Blue. The night was called Restless Soul, hosted by one of my favorite local house DJ's, Jesse Walker. I have played at local hotspot club Bricks on a few occasions and numerous other gatherings.

DJ-ing has really helped my writing and producing. Also, being a musician I feel has really helped my DJ-ing in a big way and has definitely influenced the kind of records I buy. I try to avoid the cheesy and obvious records and to look a little bit deeper for songs that are more musical, interesting and unique. It doesn't matter what bin it comes from at the record shop. If it has the right qualities I'll play it.
